California CVS customers can get $2 coupons for finding expired items!

“CVS Pharmacy stores in California are required to provide customers a $2 coupon if they identify products on store shelves that are past their sell-by date, under a settlement with the state attorney general announced Wednesday. The agreement settles claims that CVS stores routinely sold expired baby formula, over-the-counter medication and dairy products.”

“Customers are limited to one $2 coupon for each visit during which they find an expired item on store shelves.”

Man I wish I lived in California.  I would be all over this!!

This trip took me forever because I had just found out about the Huggies deal before I left so I had 4 separate transactions to do instead of 3.  Luckily my local CVS is awesome so they don’t mind. :)  On the first transaction, I decided not to use any extra bucks just to get it out of the way since it involved the Pampers fiasco.

The first thing you need to do is get a CVS ExtraCare card from one of the following methods:
*Ask a cashier at your local CVS (and receive your card instantly)
*Sign up online (and wait for it to arrive in the mail)

Once you receive your ExtraCare card, go shopping and earn piles (ok maybe not piles) of ExtraBucks.  You should also register your ExtraCare card at CVS.com so you can track your spending and ExtraBucks as well as receive coupons via email.  When ExtraBucks are used properly, you will most likely only have to spend over a dollar or two on your initial trip to CVS.  ExtraBucks (from now on referred to as ECB) are earned through weekly, monthly, and quarterly promotions at CVS - this is how you make money.

ECB promotions may include scenarios such as spend $20 on Dove products get $10 ECB or purchase 2 Hawaiian Tropic items get $7 ECB - you get the picture.  These scenarios change frequently and will be stated in each advertisement (both the weekly ads and the Clip-Free Coupon books).  If your CVS shopping trip includes a purchase involving ECB, and you successfully satisfy the requirements for the purchase, your ECB will print on the bottom of your register receipt.

CVS accepts almost all coupons including manufacturer’s coupons, internet printable (IP) coupons, CVS.com emailed coupons, cash register tape (CRT) coupons, and sometimes even competitor’s coupons.  Ask your local CVS for their specific policy on competitor’s coupons.  Additionally, you can combine CVS coupons with manufacturer’s coupons.  So if you are purchasing Dove shampoo for $2.50 and have a $1.00 off manufacturer’s coupon as well as a $1.00 off CVS CRT coupon, you will get the shampoo for $0.50.  Combining coupons can often result in a money-making scenario.

ECB are as good as cash at CVS so guard them with your life! :)  ECB can be used on almost everything CVS has to offer excluding certain items such as prescriptions, gift cards, tobacco, and alcohol.  ECB expire four weeks from the date they were printed.  The expiration date will be printed on each ECB.  And if for some reason the ECB you have earned do not print, tell the cashier - ECB can be printed manually.

ECB and CRT coupons are card-specific meaning they can only be used by the ExtraCare card that received them.  For example, if you try to use a $3 off $15 coupon that was not assigned directly to your ExtraCare card, the cash register will “beep” stating the coupon is not registered to your ExtraCare card.  See my post with more on this topic.

You don’t keep the change.  If your purchase totals $9.75 and you want to pay with $10 ECB, you will lose $0.25 ECB.  The additional amount cannot be refunded to you in any way.  Also, if you’re using, for example, a $3 off $15 purchase coupon on your shopping trip, make sure your pre-tax amount is above $15 (ask the cashier), otherwise you won’t be able to use the coupon.

If you have manufacturer’s coupons, you don’t have to spend more money to satisfy the promotion dollar amount.  For example, let’s say I have to buy $10 worth of Dove products to get $5 ECB.  I will buy two shampoos and two conditioners at $2.50 each bringing my total purchase of Dove products to $10.  I also have four manufacturer’s coupons for $1.00 off Dove hair care but since ECB promotions are calculated by the shelf price and not purchase price after coupons, I have satisfied the ECB promotion requirements and will receive $5 ECB.

You don’t have to do it all in one trip either.  Take your time - you have all week, possibly even all month, to satisfy an ECB promotion.  You can make multiple trips and can even go to different CVS stores.  Everything is tied to your personal ExtraCare card.

The short answer is probably.

CVS sends out newsletters to CVS ExtraCare cardholders who are subscribed via email once every week or two. Usually these newsletters contain a $x off $xx (i.e. $3 off $15) printable coupon. These coupons are intended to be used by the person who received that email only as it is linked directly to your CVS ExtraCare card, and in fact, when you receive a coupon via email, it will have your name on it.

Now most of us know that the internet is a glorious invention and for that reason, anyone can get a $x off $xx coupon.. almost. If the coupon was not emailed directly to you (meaning you found it somewhere on the internet), it will “beep” at the cash register when you attempt to redeem it. All coupons of the same amount (i.e. $3 off $15) have the same bar code whether it was emailed to you directly or you found the coupon online.

The only way to know if your local CVS will accept a coupon that was not emailed directly to you is to try it. I would suggest doing this with a small purchase first and using a $3 off $15 coupon that way you’re only out $3 if they don’t accept it. Most stores just push these coupons through manually but some will not.

My local CVS is absolutely wonderful and accepts pretty much anything I give them. Hopefully your CVS is the same!

Edit: These same rules apply to product specific CVS coupons (example as shown: $1.00 off ReNu MultiPlus). Product specific coupons can only be used at CVS but again, are tied to specific CVS ExtraCare cards and may “beep” if you did not receive the coupon via email directly from CVS.
